Resumption of Flights After Fire Contained at Lagos Airport
SadaNews - The airport police authority in Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital, confirmed today that they have completely contained the fire that broke out in the old terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, noting that air operations have returned to normal after a temporary halt.
The fire occurred yesterday, Monday, causing disruptions to flights and confusion among travelers, in addition to redirecting some international flights after the activities of the control tower were affected. Thick smoke was seen rising from parts of the building, while fire crews worked for hours to contain the flames.
In a statement from the airport police spokesperson, Officer Mohammed Adeola, it was explained that the fire started in a section of the old terminal before it was contained through "coordinated efforts among all responding agencies." He added that 12 workers who were trapped in areas near the control tower were rescued and received urgent medical care, with no serious injuries or fatalities reported.
Resumption of Operations
Adeola confirmed that the flights that were temporarily disrupted have fully resumed, explaining that all activities have been transferred to the new terminal, while the fire-affected terminal will remain closed to operations and entry until a technical assessment is completed.
The security leadership praised the "professionalism, courage, and quick cooperation" among the rescue and firefighting teams from the Federal Airports Authority, Lagos State firefighting services, and medical teams, emphasizing that rapid coordination contributed to saving lives and containing the incident without human losses.
