Lentils or Beans... Which Provides More Protein and Fiber?

Nutritional Comparison
For a fair comparison between the two, we can look at two of the most common types: cooked lentils versus black beans. Lentils provide slightly more protein, while black beans contain a slightly higher fiber content.
One cooked cup of lentils contains 138 calories, 18 grams of protein, 16 grams of fiber, 40 grams of carbohydrates, 731 milligrams of potassium, and 4 milligrams of sodium.
Meanwhile, one cooked cup of black beans contains 218 calories, 15 grams of protein, 17 grams of fiber, 40 grams of carbohydrates, 739 milligrams of potassium, and 331 milligrams of sodium.
At first glance, the two types seem quite similar; both are nutrient-dense, rich in protein and plant fibers. However, upon closer examination, some slight differences emerge.
"Both lentils and beans are strong dietary sources that offer many positive health benefits, and they are versatile and budget-friendly," says Vandana Sheth, a registered dietitian.
Sheth added, "Lentils provide slightly more protein than beans. They are easy to cook and digest, making them a great option, especially for plant-based protein."
Lentils are Better for Heart and Stomach
Regarding gut health, Sheth states, "Lentils are easier to digest, and beans provide more fermentable fiber." This fermentable fiber acts as a prebiotic; it nourishes beneficial gut bacteria to support the microbiome balance.
On the other hand, lentils are gentler on people who suffer from gas due to beans, making them an ideal option for increasing fiber intake.
Both lentils and beans support cardiovascular health due to their high fiber and potassium content and low fat content. However, Sheth says, "Lentils slightly outperform beans in terms of heart health benefits due to their soluble fiber, potassium, and lower sodium and fat content."
Soluble fiber lowers cholesterol by binding to it during digestion and facilitating its removal from the body. Potassium helps relax blood vessels and remove excess sodium, which may help lower blood pressure.
