Here is a Healthier Alternative to White Rice
SadaNews - The Consumer Advisory Center in Bavaria, Germany, stated that barley represents a healthier alternative to rice, as barley significantly outperforms rice in terms of dietary fiber.
The center explained that white rice contains about 1.5 grams of fiber per 100 grams, while pearl barley contains about three times that amount, at 4.6 grams. Even barley flakes can contain more than 10 grams of fiber per 100 grams.
The Benefits of Dietary Fiber
Regularly consuming plenty of fiber in our diet is beneficial for our bodies for several reasons:
Thanks to fiber, we feel full for a longer time.
Dietary fiber improves the digestive process as it stimulates bowel activity, helping to prevent constipation.
Dietary fiber reduces the risk of heart and vascular diseases as well as colon cancer.
Barley contains a relatively high amount of "beta-glucan," a soluble fiber that positively affects cholesterol levels, and it is also found in oats, for example.
What Can You Prepare with Barley?
Barley's taste is described as nutty and slightly sweet. Here are some ways to try this grain:
Pearl barley: These are polished and hulled barley grains that can be used like rice. They can also be cooked in risotto, and added to soups.
Barley flakes: These can be added to morning muesli.
Barley flour: Ground barley can be used to prepare bread. It is essential to mix barley with wheat flour, for example, or else the bread will not rise.
