The Executive Committee Discusses Ways to End the Occupation and Realize the Independence of the State of Palestine
SadaNews - The Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) held a meeting on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the PLO headquarters in Ramallah, chaired by Deputy President Hussein Sheikh, with the attendance of members of the PLO Executive Committee. The meeting addressed the latest political and field developments, efforts to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, the importance of the ongoing connection between institutions in both parts of the homeland, ways to end the Israeli occupation, and realizing the independence of the State of Palestine with its capital Jerusalem, in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
The Executive Committee reaffirmed its full support for the efforts of President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian leadership in garnering Arab, regional, and international support with brothers, partners, and friends, to protect the legitimate national rights of our Palestinian people, establish a ceasefire, allow the entry of humanitarian aid, proceed with reconstruction, stop displacement and settlement expansion, counter settler terrorism, release frozen funds from the occupation government, and maintain the historical and legal status of Islamic and Christian holy sites. The committee reiterated its commitment to continuing coordination with partners, brothers, and the international community towards a political process based on international legality resolutions to end the occupation and implement the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and establish their independent state with its capital in East Jerusalem.
The Executive Committee congratulated the Fatah movement on the success of its eighth general conference, and congratulated the newly elected members of the Central Committee and the Revolutionary Council, wishing them success in serving the Palestinian national project and enhancing the unity of the Palestinian national movement.
The committee confirmed that the series of electoral successes achieved, starting from the youth elections, through the local elections that took place in April, and culminating in the elections of the Fatah movement, reflects the commitment of the State of Palestine and the Palestinian leadership to the democratic approach, enhancing political participation, renewing national and institutional life with broad participation from women and youth sectors.
In this context, the Executive Committee discussed setting a roadmap to prepare for the upcoming Palestinian National Council elections scheduled for November, as well as preparation for conducting general elections, which requires completing the adoption of the Palestinian constitution and the laws of political parties and general elections through continued comprehensive national dialogue and adopting the draft constitution from the Central Council before putting it to public referendum. This paves the way for parliamentary elections, and the elected parliament members will become members of the next National Council. Additionally, there will be mechanisms for the adoption of National Council representatives abroad to enhance democratic legitimacy and unify the Palestinian political system for Palestinians everywhere.
The Executive Committee expressed its gratitude to the sister Republic of Egypt and the sister Republic of Lebanon for their facilitation and support in successfully conducting the Fatah elections in Egypt and Lebanon, reflecting the depth of the fraternal and historical relations with the Palestinian people.
On the economic front, the Executive Committee discussed the challenging economic and financial conditions facing the State of Palestine due to the continued Israeli occupation's imposition of financial and economic blockade and the seizure of Palestinian funds. It emphasized the importance of launching a comprehensive national economic dialogue, involving various national sectors, to face these challenges, enhance the resilience of our people, and protect national and social stability.
At the conclusion of its meeting, the Executive Committee reaffirmed its commitment to continuing work towards enhancing national unity, ending the occupation, and realizing an independent, sovereign Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem, while preserving the independent Palestinian national decision.
