World Bank: Jordan Rises to High Middle-Income Country Category

SadaNews Economy - The World Bank announced, in its annual update of country income classifications for the fiscal year 2027, the official transition of Jordan from the low middle-income category to the high middle-income category, a step that reflects improved economic indicators and updates in national statistical data.

According to the update, the gross national income per capita in Jordan, according to the "Atlas Method" adopted by the World Bank, reached 5,260 US dollars, exceeding the minimum threshold for the high middle-income category, which is set at 4,636 dollars.

The World Bank clarified that Jordan's transition to the new category resulted from a number of factors, including the re-establishment of national accounts implemented by the General Statistics Department, which involved updating the base year and expanding the statistical coverage, revealing that the size of the Jordanian economy is about 10 percent larger than previous estimates.

The bank also pointed out that the Jordanian economy continues to achieve stable growth, supported by the resilience of economic sectors, export growth, and the maintenance of stability in macroeconomic indicators, despite regional challenges.

The new classification places Jordan within the group of high middle-income countries, which is seen as a positive indicator of economic performance development and enhanced confidence in the national economy. It may also gradually reflect on the nature of financing the kingdom receives from some international financial institutions, as it transitions to financing tools that correspond to higher income levels.

The World Bank issues its income group classifications annually, based on gross national income per capita according to the "Atlas Method." This classification serves as an international reference used by financial and developmental institutions in determining financing and support policies and cooperation programs with countries.
