Trump: The agreement with Iran must be purposeful or there will be no agreement

SadaNews - U.S. President Donald Trump said today, Monday, that the agreement with Iran will either be a great and purposeful agreement or there will not be an agreement at all.

Trump described the nuclear deal signed during the presidency of former U.S. President Barack Obama, known as the "Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action," as "catastrophic and failed."

He mentioned that the nuclear deal signed with Iran during Obama's tenure opened the way for Tehran to possess nuclear weapons.

He added that any agreement he might sign would be "completely the opposite" of that agreement.

Washington and Tehran have downplayed hopes for a breakthrough in the U.S.-Israeli war that erupted three months ago, noting that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that either the United States reaches a good agreement with Iran or will deal with it "in other ways."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baqaei stated that Tehran and Washington have reached results on a large part of the issues discussed in the ongoing negotiations between them.

Baqaei said at a press conference, "We can say that we have reached results in most of the issues discussed, but this does not mean that a signing of an agreement is imminent, nor are there guarantees regarding the United States' commitments."

He explained that the positions of U.S. officials are witnessing repeated changes and contradictions, which may hinder any negotiations, pointing out that there remain points of contention in the draft agreement between the two parties.

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Baqaei confirmed that the ongoing talks with the United States do not include details regarding the strait, explaining that the issue pertains to the neighboring countries.

He added, "We are negotiating with many countries to establish a mechanism that ensures the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and benefits the international community."

Axios reported, citing U.S. officials on Sunday evening, claims that the United States and Iran are nearing an agreement that includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, allowing Tehran to sell oil, and resuming negotiations aimed at restraining Iran's nuclear program.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday evening the completion of negotiations on most terms of an "agreement" with Iran, with details expected to be revealed soon.

Pakistan is mediating between Washington and Tehran to end the war that began on February 28 with attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, prior to reaching a temporary ceasefire on April 8.
