Senate Paves the Way for Decision to Limit Trump's Military Powers Against Iran
SadaNews - The U.S. Senate has taken a new step toward limiting President Donald Trump's military powers against Iran, as several Republicans joined Democrats in advancing a resolution aimed at ending any military operations without explicit authorization from Congress.
The Senate voted yesterday, Tuesday, to move forward with what is known as the "War Powers Resolution," which calls on the U.S. administration to halt military action against Iran unless it receives official legislative approval.
The vote saw four Republican members break from the White House's position, most notably Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, who changed his stance just days after losing a tough primary election that ended his hopes for a third term.
Cassidy joined Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Rand Paul in supporting the resolution led by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine.
The vote result was 50 in favor to 47 against, while three Republicans were absent from the session: Senators John Cornyn, Tom Tillis, and Tommy Tuberville. The only Democrat who voted against the resolution was Senator John Fetterman.
This marks the eighth vote in the Senate since the launch of Operation "Epic Fury" on February 28 of last year, where Republicans had previously managed to thwart efforts to limit the president's military powers in the previous seven attempts.
This recent development reflects a growing divide within the Republican Party regarding the management of confrontation with Iran, as concerns in Congress increase over the expansion of military operations without direct legislative oversight.
