Axios: Imminent Agreement Between Washington and Tehran to End the War
SadaNews - The Axios news site reported from American officials and informed sources today, Wednesday, that the White House believes it is close to reaching an agreement with Iran regarding a one-page memorandum of understanding to end the war and lay the groundwork for more detailed negotiations regarding the nuclear program.
The site mentioned in a report that the United States expects responses from Iran regarding several key points within 48 hours.
The report indicated that the parties have not actually agreed on anything yet, but stated that this is the closest the parties have come to an agreement since the war began.
Axios stated that the agreement, which includes other provisions, will involve Iran's commitment to a temporary halt of uranium enrichment and the United States agreeing to lift its sanctions and unfreeze Iranian funds estimated at billions of dollars, as well as both sides lifting restrictions on passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The report added that the one-page memorandum with 14 provisions is being negotiated between U.S. emissaries Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner and several Iranian officials directly and also through intermediaries.
It noted that the memorandum in its current form will announce the end of the war in the region and the start of a 30-day period of negotiations for a detailed agreement to open the strait, limit Iran's nuclear program, and lift U.S. sanctions.
Axios reported, citing an American official, that the restrictions imposed by Iran on navigation through the strait and the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports will gradually be lifted over a 30-day period.
The official indicated that American forces would be able to reimpose the blockade or resume military operations if the negotiations collapsed.
On the other hand, Reuters news agency reported from a Pakistani source familiar with the negotiations confirming that Washington and Tehran are nearing a memorandum of understanding.
