Movement in Congress to Impeach Secretary of War and Call for Activation of "25th Amendment" Against Trump
SadaNews - Democratic Congresswoman Yasmin Ansari announced her intention to file official articles of impeachment - next week - to remove U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hagesth, accusing him of committing "war crimes" in Iran and exceeding the constitutional powers granted to Congress.
In a press statement, the representative of Arizona's third district sharply criticized President Donald Trump, describing his recent statements - including those made on Easter Sunday - as "deranged," warning that they are pushing the United States and the world toward a "destructive and endless war."
Ansari stated in her announcement that Trump "threatens to commit war crimes that violate U.S. law and the Geneva Conventions, in addition to the illegal acts and atrocities that have already been committed under his direction, which included the destruction of schools, hospitals, and vital civilian infrastructure."
The Congresswoman called on her fellow Republican members to urge the president to end what she described as a "suicidal war" before it's too late, warning that "those who continue to follow him blindly will also have their hands stained with blood."
Ansari based her position on her personal background and constitutional commitment, saying, "As the daughter of Iranian immigrants who fled from this regime, and as an American representative who swore to protect the Constitution of the United States, I know this situation cannot continue."
"25th Amendment" Against Trump
The Congresswoman called on the U.S. administration to activate the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, stating, "The 25th Amendment was created for a reason, and the Cabinet must use it. The fate of American troops, the Iranian people, and the foundations of our global system are at stake."
Theoretically, Trump could be stripped of his authority under the 25th Amendment, which discusses the details of transferring power to the vice president if the president is "unable to execute the powers and duties of his office." However, this requires the vice president and a majority of Cabinet members to declare that Trump is unable to perform his duties, a scenario that is unlikely.
Regarding the legal path within Congress, Ansari affirmed that she will submit articles of impeachment next week against Secretary of War Pete Hagesth, accusing him of "repeatedly violating the constitutional oath and his duty to the Constitution."
The Congresswoman emphasized that "Congress alone has the authority to declare war, not a rogue president or his followers."
She concluded her statement detailing the charges against the Secretary of War, saying that "Hagesth's reckless endangerment of American soldiers' lives, and the repeated war crimes he has committed, including bombing a girls' school in the Iranian city of Minab and deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure, all constitute grounds for his impeachment and removal from office."
Since February 28, Israel and the United States have continued their war against Iran, resulting in thousands of deaths and injuries, and the assassination of key leaders, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and security officials.
Tehran retaliates by launching missiles and drones towards Israel, and it targets what it claims to be U.S. bases and interests in Arab countries, but these countries have announced that some of these attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and damaged civilian facilities.
